Yes, BoCan is still under construction (and we have updates)

Boulder Canyon closures due to road cosntruction are constantly in flux. The best bet is to stay informed by consulting CDOT's website. Currently the big pullout for Boulderado/Animal World/Avalon is coned-off for construction: this means it. The Bowling Alley is also in the construction zone. While these are known areas to avoid, anticipate any area to be under construction and have a back-up crag in mind. While we are talking about the canyon, if you love climbing in Boulder Canyon as much as we do you will want to keep access open, the best way to do this is to stay on trail or at the crag. The canyon is a mishmash of private, Forest Service, County, and City lands. The BCC has a map giving a rough idea of where is what, but please stick to the trails and the known areas.

2019 Climber Survey Results Are In

You probably heard about our 2019 climber survey. You probably filled it out. We launched this survey as a way to get feedback from our climbing community and help steer the ship, so to speak, of the BCC.

We conducted the survey to better understand our community and brought in a professional survey-writer from the University of Utah. In short, we worked really hard on this and we’re excited to share the results with you.

Please click here to view the entire PDF with all the survey results. If you have additional feedback or comments, please email outreach@boulderclimbers.org.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE:
The future of climbing is now. From the gripping footage of Alex Honnold soloing El Capitan, to the incredible growth in climbing gyms around the country, to the 2020 Olympics, the American public is fascinated with climbing more than ever before. We have a rare opportunity to create the future that we want to see.

At Access Fund, we are thinking about the future, and we need your help to shape it. The growing numbers of climbers are putting incredible pressure on our crags and our alpine environments. Yet, more people than ever before support the protection of our public lands. Access Fund's work to protect America's climbing must evolve to meet these challenges. By attending this event, you are helping us take the right step forward.

Major Closures in Boulder Canyon Coming Up - Plan Accordingly!

Extensive road work is taking place in Boulder Canyon now through 2020; there will be one lane in places; parking in many pullouts, including the dome area at the mouth of the canyon, will be limited; this will include at times 2 hour closures for blasting. CDOT will update their website and phone with more detailed information each week. 720-465-6898. The website/hotline will refer to Mile markers; here is the rough equivalents by crag Climbers will do best during this time to meet before entering the canyon if possible, be prepared to change plans if construction makes it necessary, and avoid making the situation worse with rogue parking.

Here's the list:

Dome Rock/Elephant Buttresses mm 40

Eagle Rock mm 34.6

Cobb Rock mm 34.2

Blob Rock/Bitty Buttress mm 34.1

Happy Hour/Security Risk mm 34.0

Bihedral/Riviera mm 33.7

Boulder Falls/Boulder Slips/Plotinus/Tonnere Tower mm 33.2

Bell Buttress/Practice Rock mm 32.7

From the Aerie - Our First Raptor Blog!

From the Aerie

By Dara Miles

BCC Raptor Program Director

Welcome to the BCC’s….bird blog? Yep, from time to time we will be writing about the birds who temporarily take over your crags (and the people who watch them).

The Golden Eagles are back at Eagle Rock in Boulder Canyon, and they’re tending to an egg or two, so the crag and its approach trails are closed to climbing until July. Eagle Rock has been the preferred nest site for this nesting pair for several years running, and they have successfully fledged several eaglets from this nest.

Although it’s a big nest—about 10 feet wide--we use a spotting scope and a fixed camera with a telephoto lens to see what’s happening up there. Our biologist, Rob Roy Ramey, confirmed incubation in early March, and that allowed rangers to re-open Blob, East Blob, Bitty Buttress and Security Risk Crags to climbing on March 19.

The male and female eagles share the incubation duties. The female does most of the nest-sitting, keeping the eggs warm while the male hunts and brings food. But the female will occasionally hunt for herself, leaving the male in charge of the nest.

Golden Eagle incubation takes 40-45 days, so we’ll start looking for a chick (or chicks) around mid-April. That’s when the observation gets really interesting, and the photos, if we’re lucky enough to get them--are much cuter. Stay tuned for fluffy white things!

Celebrate Spring with the BCC Tonight at A-Lodge!

In honor of longer days and more sunlight (yay, post-work climbing!) the A-Lodge and Boulder Climbing Community are inviting you to join us for beer, music, food, and climbing revelry on Wednesday, 3/20!

This the first official A-Lodge music night of the season and we'll be hanging out and listening to live music and sipping on some Avery brews and eating the best tacos in the world from McDevitt tacos.

If tacos and good times aren't enough for you, we're giving away some great stuff from our partners at Friction Labs, Fjallraven, Petzl and Butora. You don't wanna miss it.

We'll be cracking beers and starting the music at 6:30, so meet us on out there!

Access Fund's Policy Analyst, Katie Goodwin, and Natural Resources Senior Specialist/Wildlife Ecologist, Chelsea Bebe, will present on why seasonal raptor closures are important and the ways that the climbing community can partner with land managers to maintain long-term access to climbing areas.
